This year's policy conference will explore What Works for Youth Employment in Africa, and the AI Revolution and Labour Markets in Developing Countries. The future of work is uncertain for millions of people in the Global South, and particularly the youth.
Many countries—particularly in Latin America and Africa—are facing the challenge of high rates of youth unemployment and more young people hoping to join the workforce each and every year. Indeed, by 2030, more young people will be entering the African workforce each year than in the rest of the world combined (IMF).
Added to this, the development and adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping the global labour markets and the world economy in ways we do not yet fully understand.
On June 5, PEP will host its 2024 Policy Conference exploring two distinct themes relating to the future of work in the Global South:
- What Works for Youth Employment in Africa: Identifying specific actions to improve the lives of young women and men in 10 African countries
- A diverse panel—bringing together practitioners, stakeholders and researchers—will lead an interactive discussion to identify how they can drive changes to improve the lives of young women and men.
- The panellists will share their insights and experiences, looking at which youth employment policies and programs are working, the context-specific issues emerging from PEP research, and what is needed to overcome these barriers.
- This session will draw on PEP research supported under the What Works for Youth Employment in Africa program and is organised in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation
- The AI Revolution and Labour Markets in Developing Countries: Towards a Southern-Driven Research Agenda
- This session will explore the opportunities, challenges, and policy implications of AI for developing countries.
- The keynote presentation and panel of international experts will bring Southern perspectives to the global conversation on AI.
Providing an opportunity for international academic and governmental participants to debate the issues at hand, the conference will help bridge the gap between research and policy to promote development.
After four years of fully online policy conferences, PEP is delighted to be bringing together our researchers, partners and collaborators for an in-person event held as part of the 2024 PEP Annual Conference. It will also be broadcast live on our YouTube channel from 9 a.m. (UTC+3).
