Dr Agurto obtained his Ph.D. in Economics at the Vancouver School of Economics - VSE under the supervision of Dr. Siwan Anderson. He is Professor at the Department of Economics at Universidad de Piura, Peru, where he is also the Vice President for Research. He is the president of the Peruvian Economic Association, a member of Lima School of Economics and the Director of the Lima Summer School in Economics (co-organized with VSE). He has been a Visiting Lecturer at the Vancouver School of Economics from 2010 to 2013 and a Visiting Professor at the Virginia Tech Department of Economics from 2015 to 2017 and in 2022. Since 2018 he is a Scientific Mentor for PEP. His research focuses on development economics, economics of education, social inclusion, natural resources, applied econometrics and impact evaluation. He has been a consultant for the IDB, the UNDP and the Peruvian Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion. Dr. Agurto has won the IDRC Doctoral Research Award, the GDN Award for Outstanding Research in Development and the PEP PIERI Award. He served as a member of the Piura Regional Commission for Consumer and Competition Affairs from 2011 to 2015.
