Key Action Areas for Youth Employment Policy in Senegal

Young people in Senegal face precarious working conditions with there being only one-tenth of formal jobs available in the market each year as against the need. Despite the fact that the government has created thousands of jobs for young people through several public youth employment programmes over recent decades, these challenges remain.
Following an in-depth empirical review of youth employment policies and programs (YEPs) in Senegal, a team of local researchers and stakeholders recommended specific actions to improve the efficiency and outcomes of these interventions:
- Integrating the national employment promotion strategy into a development strategy for the priority sectors in Senegal’s second Priority Action Plan (PAP 2A),
- Specifically, ensuring inclusive dialogue with the private sector to identify bottlenecks, and reorienting technical and vocational education and training (TVET) to align with the 10 priority sectors identified in the PAP 2A.
