Key Action Areas for Youth Employment Policy in Nigeria

High population growth, poor economic management, a deteriorating education system among other reasons have led to rising unemployment in Nigeria, with the youth being severely affected. The government has launched multiple youth employment policies and programmes (YEPs) in response.
Following an in-depth empirical review of these YEPs, a team of local researchers and stakeholders recommended specific actions to improve their efficiency and outcomes:
- Financial grants for entrepreneurs, including inclusiveness criteria, i.e, giving women and other marginalized groups a greater opportunity to participate,
- Improving the governance and coordination of youth employment policies for greater efficiency
- Developing a resource mobilization strategy, including support of private sector, philanthropists and international development organizations.
