Haroon Bhorat is Professor of Economics and Director of the Development Policy Research Unit at the University of Cape Town, South Africa.

He has his PhD in Economics through Stellenbosch University (South Africa), and studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research interests cover labour economics, poverty and income distribution.

He holds many notable positions including a highly prestigious National Research Chair; he is a Non-resident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution; and he sits on the boards of the National Research Foundation (NRF), and UNU World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER). Prof. Bhorat served as Head of Research for the UN’s High-Level Panel on the Post-2015 Development Agenda.

He was economic advisor to two past Ministers of Finance and previous South African Presidents, formally serving on the Presidential Economic Advisory Panel.

Prof Bhorat has co-authored and co-edited a number of books on labour market and poverty issues in Africa, and has published more than 200 academic journal articles, book chapters and working papers.

He is a member of the Board of the Partnership for Economic Policy.
