Solar pumping in Burkina Faso: moving from awareness to adoption

Burkina Faso has made renewable energy central to its energy transition. Solar-powered irrigation pumps offer a promising way to link energy, water and agriculture. Even so, few farmers have adopted them. Local PEP-supported researchers found that information campaigns and practical demonstrations help farmers learn about solar pumps. These efforts do not, however, make farmers more likely to buy one or willing to pay more for it. This is because the campaigns do not address the financial and practical barriers to adoption. The research team recommends that policymakers build a more complete package of support to help farmers adopt solar pumping.
