Dr. Sahawal Alidou is a research economist at the African Development Bank, originally from the Republic of Benin. He earned a joint PhD in Economics from the University of Antwerp and KU Leuven (Belgium) in 2020, and subsequently served as a lecturer and research associate at the University of Antwerp (2020–2021). Before embarking on his doctoral studies, he worked for eight years in Benin as a statistician-economist specializing in public policy, monitoring, and evaluation.
Dr. Alidou’s research lies within the field of household economics, with a strong focus on education economics. He has authored and co-authored several articles published in leading journals, including World Development, the Journal of Population Economics, and the Journal of Development Studies. His work has also been translated into policy briefs and blogs aimed at engaging a broader, non-academic audience, particularly policymakers.
In addition to his PhD, Dr. Alidou holds a Master’s degree in Statistics and Economics from the École Nationale d’Économie Appliquée et de Management (Benin), and an Advanced Master’s in International and Development Economics from the Université de Namur and Université Catholique de Louvain (Belgium).
