Alemayehu Seyoum Taffesse is currently a Senior Research Fellow at the International Food Policy Research Institute and leader of its Ethiopia Strategy Support Program.

His most recent broad areas of research and publications include individual psycho-social characteristics (primarily aspirations and locus of control), behaviour, and well-being outcomes in Ethiopia and beyond; agricultural transformation in sub-Saharan Africa, with emphasis on Ethiopia; social protection and resilience (including impact evaluation of large multi-year public programs such as Ethiopia’s Productive Safety Net Program).

Alemayehu is an Elected Fellow of the Econometric Society and the Ethiopian Academy of Sciences. He has also served as the president of the Ethiopian Economics Association. He serves on the Independent Council of Economic Advisors to the Government of Ethiopia.

Alemayehu has previously worked as an assistant professor of economics at Addis Ababa University, an economic affairs officer at the UNECA, and country director for Ethiopia at the International Growth Center. He holds a BA in Economics from Addis Ababa University, an M.Sc. in Quantitative Development Economics from the University of Warwick, and a D.Phil. in Economics from the University of Oxford.

Dr. Taffesse is a member of the Board of the Partnership for Economic Policy.
