Workshop on Poverty and Social Impact Analysis

Objectives

The objectives of this workshop are to:

• Enhance the skills of researchers and officials to conduct poverty and social impact assessments using quantitative data and state-of‐the‐art methods; 
• Begin to generate specific country analyses that deal with pressing policy concerns;
• Support the building of country teams that can collaborate and strengthen national networks for welfare analysis beyond the duration of the workshop;
• Share experiences between countries that have made advancements in the area of poverty analysis and alleviation.

Material and references

The workshop will make extensive use of material developed recently by UNDP and PEP; this is available at: http://dasp.ecn.ulaval.ca/training_materials/tr_mat.htm

It will also make extensive use of the Stata software and of DASP (Distributive Analysis for Stata Package) to illustrate and apply the measurement and policy tools that will be presented. DASP is available at: http://dasp.ecn.ulaval.ca/

Workshop coverage and format

The workshop will cover the following topics:

• Concepts and measurement of well-being (including concepts of multidimensionality) (0.5 day)
• Learning Stata and the Distributive Analysis for Stata Package (DASP) (part 1  / part2 ) (1 day)
• Basic normative and descriptive tools for understanding and comparing (0.5 day)
• Sampling, inference and testing (part 1 / part2) (0.3 day)
• Use of household surveys for poverty and social impact analysis: the case of Uganda (0.2 day)
• Inequality and equity (Part 1 / Part 2) (0.5 day)
• Poverty indices and poverty lines (including how to adjust for spatial and temporal differences in prices and poverty baskets) (Part 1 / Part 2) (0.5 day)
