The African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) is organizing a two-week technical workshop on Gender and Economic Analysis to be held in Nairobi, 13 to 24 February 2012.
In economics there is a wide diversity of agents and identities, expressing different types of economic behavior and social relationships, partly influenced by their social position. One of the most pertinent social differentiations among agents in any economy is that of gender. Gender inequalities for instance, impact upon economic variables such as productivity, economic growth and efficiency.
Over the past twenty five years, the recognition of gender stratification and its impact upon economic dynamics has moved out of the margins of economic analysis, and a new area of research has emerged: feminist economics. Feminist economics has indeed made an impact on the discipline. Currently, in the area of public finance the gender analysis of state budgets is making most of its progress in the work being undertaken in developing countries.
This intensive two week course will cover ten topics distributed over 10 sessions.
The methodology of the workshop will consist of formal lectures, group and individual discussions of researcher-led learning activities and exercises. This will ensure that all participants go through the necessary stages of in-depth gender critique in economics, to engender economic analysis both qualitatively and quantitatively, and to develop gender-aware economic policy suggestions. The exercises, that will largely concern African economies, will enable the participants to apply gender analysis to a particular problem, in terms of data analysis, policy evaluation and policy advice.
Each participant will be required to write a one or two page concept note on gender and economics during this workshop and share it with other participants. AERC further expects the participants to develop these concept papers into full research papers.
By the end of the course the participants should have acquired skills for:
