PEP researchers in Mali are bridging the gap between research and policy

Bamako, Mali – April 9, 2011

A recently concluded PEP research project has generated important findings on the distribution and (multidimensional) characteristics of poverty and inequality in Mali. The study was conducted in consultation with the technical and financial partners involved in the implementation of the country’s anti-poverty strategy, the “Cadre Stratégique de Lutte contre la Pauvreté” (CSLP) – including the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the European Union and French Cooperation, the National Bureau of Statistics, etc.

On April 9, 2011, a national conference was organised in collaboration with - and within the headquarters of - the Ministry of Economy and Finance in Bamako, in order to officially and publicly disseminate these important findings. Besides the above-mentioned partners, other public officials, members of research institutes, as well as representatives of civil society and the private sector, attended the event to find out and discuss the study’s main outcomes and methodologies.

The interaction that resulted allowed the PEP research team members to contribute to, and even influence the national debate on economic policies to address poverty and inequality issues. It led to the definition of a collaboration strategy between researchers and decision-makers in Mali and the suggestion, from other partners (from the European Union) to sponsor the formation of special research team for poverty analysis, led in part by the PEP researchers.

The event also benefited from extensive media coverage at the national level, from several reports by the main television and radio news channels of the country.
